Why The Tourniquet?
A tourniquet is a constricting and compressive device used to control arterial and venous blood flow to a portion of an extremity for a period of time. This device is used to prevent hemorrhagic death.
In some disaster areas there has been an urgent need to use tourniquets, as many victims of non-fatal injuries died as a result of severe bleeding before reaching medical centers. Some of these areas are under siege where medical supplies cannot be delivered. Therefore, alternatives had to be found.
Using open source techniques, we created the device and designed it for adult and pediatric use.
The Glia Tourniquet has been field-tested. Using technologies such as 3D printing, the Glia Tourniquet can be manufactured for a material cost of USD$7 and a retail cost of USD$20. Comparably, the gold-standard tourniquet on the market retails for USD$50 per unit.
With more than 2500 distributed, the Glia Tourniquet is already helping to save lives.
The Glia Tourniquet is being produced and deployed in Gaza. Medical specialists in emergency and crisis management are training medical staff on the use of the tourniquet. The tourniquet is being distributed to the trainees and the specialized centers for use in emergencies.
Additionally, the Glia Tourniquet is being deployed in Ukraine.
